On some level, radio broadcasting and podcasting seem similar, Both produce audio content to inform, educate, or entertain an audience. In addition, both are primarily audio media, although they can, and sometime do, include video.
However, there are significant and interesting difference between the two.
Podcasts are recorded and edited. Radio shows, however are generally live boradcasts. The might have pre-recorded segments. but radio programs generally do not go through an editing process. On top of that, podcasts are on-demand which allows listeners to download episodes at their convinience. A podcast episode can be downloaded or streamed from directories and listened to on a smart divice.
The ablitiy to download podcasts and listen to them at your leisure is a big part of their appeal. This is especially true among so-called Millennials, so it's perhaps no suprise that they are the largest demographic listening to podcasts. Conversely, people from generation X listen to radio more than any other demographic.
Finally, the type of content covered by each meduim differs. broadcast radio usually covers topics that have a broader appeal. These topics are generally decided by what's trending in the news and media. On the other hand, podcasting is primary a niche-based medium. Podcast hosts often have the freedom of pick the format, length, and topic of their shows.
